A police operation in Eldoret town, Uasin Gishu County saw over 200 vehicles and 100 drivers arrested for noncompliance.
During an inspection exercise, the police officers, accompanied by officers from the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) saw hundreds of vehicles pulled over.
Speaking to a local media house, a police officer noted that police officers would intensify their crackdown to ensure Kenyans remained safe during the festive season that has in the past been marked with high cases of road accidents.
He pointed out issues for the arrest among them, faulty speed governors, overspeeding, reckless driving, operating without a driver's license, and noncompliance to Covid-19 protocols.
"During the festive season, most drivers seem to get excited due to traveling upcountry so they end up speeding along the roads and inevitably cause accidents.
"I appeal to all drivers to ensure that they comply with the set guidelines," the officer noted.
Furthermore, he issued a warning on SACCOs to ensure the matatus are roadworthy and the drivers comply with the rules.
An officer from the NTSA also affirmed their resolve to reduce the number of road accidents during the festive season.
" We want to ensure all vehicles on the road comply with the traffic rules. We're currently doing sensitization in various public service vehicles to urge drivers to ensure the safety of their passengers by driving safely," she stated.
The NTSA officer also appealed to the boda boda sector as she noticed that a section of them didn't wear the protective gears and also carried excess pillions.
The registration plates for impounded cars were removed.
Police crackdowns have intensified across the country as the festive season approaches. Police officers have previously nabbed scores of motorists and passengers for breaking the law.
This has been due to the recent spike in the number of road accidents according to a report released by NTSA.
The report showed a 5.8 percent increase in the number of fatalities between January and October as compared to a similar period the previous year.
The death toll stood at 3,114, an increase as compared to 2,942 in 2019.
