Radio has for ages been considered the most widely accessed form of communication because it speaks intimately and privately to millions of audience across the globe.
However, according to the 2020 report by the Media Council of Kenya (MCK) on listenership in Kenya, the once popular medium seems to be losing dominance.
According to the State of The Media Report 2020 released on Friday, December 18, Radio Citizen was the station with the highest listenership.
The Royal Media Services-owned station had a market share of 19% followed by Radio Jambo at 14%.A signpost along Denis Pritt road showing radio stations hosted by Royal Media Services
Radio Maisha came in third with 10% followed by Inooro FM (5%), Kameme FM (&) and Milele FM (5%).
Other stations were Classic 105 (3%), Radio Taifa (3%), Ramogi FM (3%), Musyi FM (3%) and Kass FM (2%).
The MCK report presented by organisation's CEO David Omwoyo indicated that radio listenership across the country had dropped from 84% in 2019 to 74%.
That was even as TV viewership rose from 73% to 74% with NTV making a comeback in the top three most watched stations.
The most watched TV station is Citizen TV with a market share of 35% followed by NTV (13%) and KTN Home (11%).
Other stations include KTN News (9%), Inooro TV (7%), K24 TV (6%) and KBC (5%).
The data also showed that more men listened to radio than women with more numbers being rural residents.
On average, 45% of the respondents revealed that they listened to news on the radio more than any other programme, with 28% preferring music while 7% tuned in for politics.
For several years now, Radio Citizen has maintained the lead as the most listened to radio brand across the country for its educational content and it is preferred in the rural areas.Media Council of Kenya CEO David Omwoyo (Second from the Left) with members of the council during a press briefing in Nairobi.File
