Kenya Railways Sets Date for SGR Midnight Train

  • Kenya Railways has announced a revised schedule for services along Nairobi - Mombasa, and also set the date for the commencement of the night train service

    The agency, on Thursday, January 7, said that the night Standard Gauge Railway (SGR) train will be available from Saturday, January 9. 

    It added that night service commuters will be provided with two trains, one departing Nairobi and another departing Mombasa at the same time. 

    "This will be an express service departing Nairobi and Mombasa at 10 pm to arrive at their destination at 3:35 am," Kenya Railways tweeted.

    The night train was an addition to the Inter-county train (morning) and express train (afternoon) services. 

    The inter-county train service from Nairobi will depart at 8 am and arrive at Mombasa at 2 pm. 

    It will make a stopover at Athi River at 8:19, Emali 9:27 am, Kibwezi 10:14 am, Mtito Andei 10:50 am, Voi 12:02 am, Miasenyi 12:41 and Mariakani at 13:27 pm. All stopovers will be for three minutes only. 

    The inter-county train service from Mombasa will depart at 8 am and arrive at Nairobi at 2:10 pm, making stopovers at the seven stations. 

    The express train will depart Nairobi 3:35 pm and arrive Mombasa at 8:08 pm. The other train service will depart Mombasa at 3:15 pm and arrive in Nairobi at 8:08 pm. 

    In a statement released on Sunday, January 3, the corporation had announced that the night train would leave the Nairobi Terminus at 9 pm and arrive in Mombasa 3 am. 

    The train will be operating within curfew hours of 10 pm and 4 am, after President Uhuru Kenyatta extended the nationwide curfew to Friday, March 12. 

    Kenya Railways also announced that it was set to unveil a train service to Western Kenya in 2021.
