Self-proclaimed private investigator Jane Mugo has given Kenyans a glimpse into the early days of her career as an undercover detective.
Speaking during an interview on January 27, Jane, a spy, stated for the first time, that Director of Criminal Investigations George Kinoti inspired her to join the detective world.
Having cleared her high school at Karoti Girls Secondary school a few years after former Gichugu MP Martha Karua, Ms Mugo was actively involved in finding solutions to the insecurity that ravaged her home area at the time.
Karua recommended her to Cradle Kenya, a non-profit child protection and human rights group in Nairobi where she would work as an undercover agent.
It was while working in the NGO world that Jane rubbed shoulders with Kinoti who at the time was a Personal Assistant to former DCI boss Joseph Kamau.
“Kinoti sent me to Kabete Police Station to do some undercover exercises, and when I was there, I developed a passion to become either a police officer or an undercover investigator, and that's because I did not have money to join college,” she stated.
“Our late Minister John Michuki paid for my college fees to study criminology in Nairobi. I used to work in Kabete Police Station part-time, and attend classes. I also did a diploma in security and worked with senior police officers as an undercover agent. Later on, they told me to open my own security company because I have a gift,” Jane added.
The spy has worked on many sensitive cases in the country including the NYS scandal where she claimed she was underpaid and another case involving a wealthy Indian man which set her on a collision course with influential police bosses.
She disclosed that her work has seen her ruffle feathers of senior police bosses, top politicians and business people.
She specifically spoke about a warrant of arrest that was issued against her after an exposé she had had investigate aired on a local TV station. The private eye alleged that the DCI issued a warrant of arrest against her, terming her a wanted criminal. The arrest warrant was, however, lifted by a Nairobi court which instructed her to appear for plea taking.
