A form 4 student, Brian Wekesa, attacked and killed his father on Monday, 1 February 2021 at Khayinga Village, Bungoma County.

The 45-year old man was visiting his son's house to find out why he had been missing classes.

He would walk in on his son engaging in a romantic moment with a lady, something that enraged Wekesa who proceeded to attack his father.

The Kisuluni Secondary School student landed heavy blows and kicks on him, took a machete and inflicted more injuries to the jua kali artisan on his head and arms.

He then fled from a group of first responders who had heard screams from the house.

The man succumbed to his injuries moments before the son took to hiding at a friends house.

Wekesa was arrested and will be arraigned in court on Wednesday, 3 February 2021.

The National Authority for the Campaign Against Drug Abuse has attributed the recent unrest among school-going children to drug abuse. Cases of students attacking and killing their peers, and people close to them, are a rising trend in Kenya.

Psychologists believe the unrest among students is related to the effects of mental and behavioral distress.

"Some students have experienced psychological distress during the long period of absence from school. Some could be suffering from the effects of issues or challenges that have been bottled up for a long time, and the situation might have been worsened by the fact that they had no one to talk to," Emma Karitu, a counselling psychologist told the Nation.
