The National Youth Service (NYS) will work with the Ministry of Interior and the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) to train bodaboda riders in a bid to curb runaway accidents on Kenyan roads.

Speaking during a press conference NYS Director, Matilda Sakwa, said that the youth service is coming up with a program that will impact skills of resilience, discipline, first aid and hygiene for bodaboda riders.

She added that she was happy the government had chosen NYS to impact character development skills.

‘’I am happy for the training opportunity and thank the government for choosing NYS to be part of the program. NYS is coming up with a program to impact skills of resilience, hygiene and being cautious on the road,’’ she stated.

The director also added that bodaboda riders are a known menace in the country and that they are causing a lot of accidents. She added NYS will ensure that riders observe traffic laws.

‘’You may know how to ride but lack patience and discipline on the road. We have a training school where will impact riders with this knowledge,’’ she stated.

Sakwa's remarks come a day after a bodaboda rider robbed a motorist of half a million in Nyali, Mombasa.

The motorist recounted to police how he fell into the trap of settling a minor accident by paying a bodaboda rider.

When he opened the bag to pick the money, the bodaboda rider and five other riders grabbed the bag and took off.
