The DCI has cautioned motorists against settling traffic accident cases without involving the police after a motorist lost Ksh500,000 in Nyali, Mombasa after a traffic incident with a boda boda rider

Abdallah Mohamed painfully recounted to the police how he fell into the trap of settling the matter by compensating the rider after a minor road accident.

When Abdallah opened his bag to pick the money to compensate the boda boda rider, five riders grabbed the bag and took off. The police have disclosed that the injured rider was among the five.

The DCI advised motorists not to fall for such antics but to instead report such matters to the police

This incident comes just months after the DCI opened a new crime hotline centre on Thursday, December 10.

DCI Kinoti launched 0800722203 as the toll-free number that Kenyans will use to report crimes to the unit.

The 2018 Annual Crime Report released by the National Police Service revealed that street crimes are increasing in Mombasa, Nairobi, Kiambu, Meru and other large cities.

The report also added that most street crimes involved multiple armed assailants and that in some instances, large crowds of street criminals escalate criminal activity into mob violence.

The DCI Crime-Stopper centre hopes to reduce crimes of opportunity such as pickpocketing, snatching and grabbing attacks in crowded areas.

When using the toll-free number, the anonymity of the caller is 100 percent ensured and therefore Kenyans are urged to use this service in ensuring timely reporting of crimes so that suspected criminals are arrested, arraigned in court and prosecuted within a short time.
