The construction of the Gikomba market is down to it's final touches according to the Presidential Delivery Unit (PDU).
The six-storey market, which is estimated to cost Ksh500 million, will accommodate a total of 725 traders and feature mobile money outlets, beauty parlours and hotels.
Principal Secretaries, led by State Department of Gender Affairs, Safina Kwekwe, inspected the market on Wednesday, February 10, and checked on its progress.
The objective of these visits is to assess the progress of the projects and to acquaint themselves with challenges affecting the effective implementation of some of the projects with a view to recommend or implement appropriate solutions.
Photos shared online showed the nearly-completed modern building with a smooth finish.
Individual stalls lined the interior, each fitted with a sink on the periphery offering enough space for each trader's wares and a washing place as well.
The building also has floodlights to improve security, especially for night-trading activities.
The highrise market is expected to offer a solution to the perennial fires at the makeshift market over the past years.
Traders who were displaced by the fires will be given first priorities following its completion.
Nairobi county is allocated approximately Ksh1.4 billion within the area for five markets. They include; Mwariro market in Westlands and Starehe, Karandini market and Wakulima market along Kagundo road.
Mwariro Market in Starehe constituency which was constructed at a cost of Ksh389 million and Westlands at Ksh214 million are already complete.
