A family in Nairobi's Kahawa West area has revealed the last moments of their kin, lawyer Benson Kayai who has been missing since Sunday, February 7.

According to police reports, the lawyer was last spotted at around 6 pm along Muhoho avenue, South C around a week ago.

Speaking to Citizen TV, the lawyer's son, Ian Kayai, revealed that he had a conversation with his father on the phone at around 5 pm on the fateful day.

His father had called to find out how the family business was doing. Ian, who had not visited the business in a while, promised to get back after undertaking a physical checkup on the shop. However, at around 6 p.m, phone calls to his father went unanswered.

Ian noted that his father sounded fine and did not show any signs of distress. Kayai's brother, Nick Kayai, also narrated the events of the day based on eye witness reports.

He detailed that two cars were seen blocking Kayai's vehicle along Muhoho avenue - on the fateful day. He stated that unknown people jumped from the vehicles, and forcibly abducted Kayai before speeding off.

Lang'ata OCPD Benjamin Mwanthi said that they received reports about a car that had been abandoned in the middle of the road in the same area Kayai disappeared.

Inside the car were food essentials such as bread and milk. In an attempt to identify whether the car belonged to the lawyer, police tracked the owner of the car to a local resident. Upon interrogation, he confirmed that he usually often gave the car to Kayai to use mostly on the weekends. The family, however, confirmed that Kayai drove a Mercedes.

"His car is a Mercedes, but he was not using it that day, he had a fielder which was KCC something.." Nick stated.

A spot check on the Law Society of Kenya website revealed that Kayai worked on cases dealing with commercial law, corporate, criminal law, family law, and succession matters, landlords and tenants law. Police are trying to establish whether a case he was involved in could be the cause of his abduction.

The lawyer hit the headlines in 2019 after being charged in court for allegedly stealing Ksh20 million from a client. The judge had issued the lawyer to comply and pay the money failure to which the case would proceed to full trial.
