Among the issues fronted by the students included the closure of the school canteen and removal of eggs, meat, and fruits from the school menu. They lamented that their daily diet now consists of only ugali and cabbage although the school fee has not been reviewed downwards.

In a video seen by Kenyans.co.ke, the students boycotted classes and camped at the school gate armed with chants and placards.

Further, the students accused the principal of mismanaging funds and mistreating both the staff and students. Media reports indicate that a section of the support staff claimed they were being caned by Chumba.

Following the unrest, police were dispatched to the scene in a bid to calm the situation. At the time of publishing the story, no school property was damaged by the students.

Cases of riots and strikes have been among the challenges facing the education sector since schools reopened on January 4, 2021 after a nine-month hiatus.

A similar situation saw students from Father Simon Secondary School in Nambale Sub-county, Busia County stage a riot after some of them missed meals at the institution.

They cited that a section of the teachers had sold foodstuffs for their own benefit and sought their removal. A minister from the Busia County government however declined to comment explaining that the institution is not under the county government.

Another situation saw students from Lugulu Girls High school in Bungoma, storm out of the institution protesting over the alleged defilement of one of their colleagues by a male teacher.

This led to an uproar as police intervened on the case which led to the closure of the school for further investigations into the matter.
