Speaking in Roysambu during an inspection on February 27, Cabinet Secretary (CS) for water, sanitation and irrigation, Sicily Kariuki said that the water would be drained at Dandora where the ministry had acquired land for that purpose.

“Nairobi has a lot of residents who do not get access to water as it is wasted. We are trying to build drainage systems that will lead water to Dandora where we have acquired land for that purpose, “the CS stated.

The CS added that the sewage project was unveiled in different populated Nairobi constituencies including Ruaka and MwikiRuaka, Mwiki, Kahawa Sukari and Limuru.

The heavy rains experienced in the country have left estates flooded, property destroyed and roads inaccessible.

Residents of Nairobi county have particularly been affected by the rains due to the poor state of drainage in the county.

On February 10, raw sewage flowed into the houses of some tenants in Githurai 45. A video posted online showed tenants walking through the sludge as they tried to salvage their property which was strapped in the houses.

The residents stated that sewage started flowing into their houses on February 7, following heavy rains that were witnessed in Nairobi county.

The sewage line expansion project will help in reducing flooding cases and also eliminating diseases like cholera and diarrhoea which are mainly caused by poor sanitation.
