A man has been sentenced to 50 years in prison for the murder of the wife of the former Kakamega District Commissioner Paul Yatich which happened three years ago.
The prosecution proved the case beyond reasonable doubt after Boniface Kiptoo's accomplices turned state witnesses.
Kiptoo, who was an employee at the couple’s home, robbed the woman, Barsibet, of her household property including a vehicle, two ATM cards whose accounts contained about Ksh700,000.
He then proceeded to kill her using a blunt panga between October 13 and October 14, 2018 at Kibulgeny area in Soy Sub-county, Uasin Gishu County, in the company of the accomplices, who were then well known to Kiptoo.
Kiptoo was also found guilty of robbery with violence and handling stolen property.
The prosecution also had an additional 13 witnesses including Yatich, the daughter, neighbours, DCI officers and a doctor from Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital who had performed a post mortem on the body.
Kiptoo denied the charges when he was arraigned in court in 2018 saying he had left the home the day before Barsibet was killed.
He went ahead to request to be released on bail but was denied as Prosecutor Thomas Mwaura argued that he was a flight risk.
The prosecution further stated that there was a likelihood that the accused would run away if he was released on bail as neither his nor his parent’s place of residence was known.
In North East Kano, Muhoroni, in Kisumu County, two brothers died after engaging in a fight allegedly prompted by a quarrel between their wives.
The wives’ reports that their peace had been violated prompted their spouses to confront each other, in a fight that ended in the death of the siblings.
