NARC-Kenya leader Martha Karua on Tuesday, March 9, condemned President Uhuru Kenyatta for rallying support for the Building Bridges Initiative (BBI). Karua claimed the president was using the referendum to retain power even after 2022.

In a press conference by the Linda Katiba Initiative, Karua alluded that the BBI was meant to overthrow the Constitution of Kenya 2010.

"We know constitutions exist to limit the power a president or anybody in authority may exercise. This (BBI) is a coup and you will realise in the present time, military coups are not fashionable. So coups of overthrowing the constitution appear to be the in thing," Karua lamented.

Further, she stated that the BBI was not seeking to amend the 2010 constitution but to overhaul it. Karua stated that out of the 18 chapters in the constitution, 14 were being amended.

She alleged that the president had not hidden his contempt for the constitution and the rule of law throughout his stay in government.

"We have seen MCAs getting bribed, being intimidated and we have seen the Baringo MCAs, the ones who voted no, going under investigations writing statements with the Directorate of Criminal Investigations," she stated.

Through Parliament, Karua stated that the Jubilee government had passed numerous unconstitutional laws which had been struck out by the courts.

She warned that the elections in 2022 would not be free and fair if Kenyans did not stop some of the vices witnessed in the by-elections as early as now.

"If we stand silent and do nothing, we will not have elections as we know them in 2022. The President will succeed himself or the administration succeed itself. The ‘big boys’ from the 5 major tribes in Kenya will ‘eat’ on behalf of their tribes," she stated.

President Uhuru and ODM leader Raila Odinga have on a number of occasions rooted for the BBI saying it will increase resources devolved to the grassroots.
