Health CS Mutahi Kagwe has announced that Kenya is on the third Wave of the Covid-19 pandemic as 12 people succumbed to the virus in the last 24 hours, pushing Kenya's cumulative fatalities to 1,898.
Speaking on Wednesday, March 10, the Health CS stated that a total of 713 people tested positive for the Coronavirus out of a sample size of 5,230 tested. The total confirmed positive cases are now 110,356.
The daily cases reported were the highest number of cases in 2021 with the previous high being on March 6, where Kenya recorded 633 cases.
"Today's positivity rate at 14 percent which is the highest since the second phase in late November 2020.
"We are about to start another difficult period. But having overcome the first two waves, we can also overcome this one. Let us renew our commitment to ensure we can save our loved ones," he stated.
167 patients have recovered from the disease, 52 from various health facilities while 115 are from the Home-Based and Isolation Care. Total recoveries now stand at 87,903.
A total of 563 patients are currently admitted to various health facilities countrywide, while 1,588 patients are on Home Based Isolation and Care.
CS Kagwe observed that the number of patients in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) has risen to 89; 21 are on ventilatory support 59 on supplemental oxygen and 9 patients are on observation.
He also maintained that the Covid-19 vaccines were being distributed in a transparent, accountable manner
"AstraZeneca has been approved by WHO, there are other vaccines that have been submitted for WHO approval. There are established structures mandated to deal with deployment of vaccines to the counties," he stated noting that they were safe.
To mitigate and further curb the spread of the virus CoG chairman Governor Martin Wambora announced a 30-day ban on political gatherings.
“We urge Kenyans to be extra vigilant as we deal with the third wave of the virus in the country,” Wambora stated.
