Update: Comedian Eric Omondi has been freed on Ksh50,000 police bond after being arrested for illegally producing and distributing unauthorised films.
He will be arraigned in court on March 18, 2021.
Entertainer and comedian Eric Omondi has been arrested by officers from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI).
The comedian was arrested on Thursday, March 11 following complaints by Kenya Film Classification Board (KFCB) Chief Executive Officer Ezekiel Mutua.
"He was arrested for violating the provisions of the Films and Stage Plays Act Cap 222 of the Laws of Kenya by producing and distributing unauthorized films dubbed "Wife Material," KFCB CEO said.KFCB CEO Ezekiel Mutua addressing a forum at Kenyatta University in Nairobi on February 22, 2020
Mutua added that the Board will take all possible legal means to curb the production and exhibition of unauthorized films on any platform meant for public exhibition.
"Protection of children from exposure to harmful content remains our core mandate and any artist producing any content for public consumption must ensure that they comply with the provisions of the Films and Stage Plays Act Cap 222 of the Laws of Kenya," said Mutua.
The comedian recently announced that season two of his show dabbed the 'Wife material' is in production.
On 5 December 2020, the comedian is reported to have defied alleged orders issued by the Nairobi Metropolitan Services (NMS) in a property row in the upmarket Lavington estate, Nairobi.
In the same month, Mutua called on the DCI to arrest him saying that his parties of the season one 'Wife material' shows indicated ‘criminal’ activities.
