A 56-year-old man was apprehended at a secondary school in Nandi County, after sitting the KCSE exam on behalf of a candidate

Police said that Geoffrey Rono impersonated one Cleophas Kavulavu at Ndurio Secondary School in Nandi South on Friday, March 26.

They, however, did not disclose the age and more details of the KCSE Candidate. Nandi Deputy Commissioner, John Tanui confirmed the incident and said that they accosted the 56-year-old after sitting the first exam, English Paper 1.

Rono lacked relevant documents and could not even recall the admission number of the candidate.

"He was arrested while preparing for another exam and we had to wait for him to send for his ID Card from home. That was when we noted he was impersonating a candidate," Tanui said.

In Kisumu County, police were forced to intervene and readmit a candidate at Barnabas Girls Secondary School after the school head barred her from sitting the exams.

Benter Ayacko had been accused of being mentally ill and attempting to commit suicide in the school premises. Kisumu County Commissioner Josephine Ouko ensured that the student was back at school after 6 pm.

The Teachers Service Commission (TSC) launched an investigation into the issue which drew condemnation from exam stakeholders.

Education CS George Magoha, on Wednesday, March 24, warned that individuals planning to sit exams for KCSE candidates risk arrest and prosecution. He said that some teachers and students from the universities had been hired to do exams on behalf of ‘weak’ students.

"The concept of two policemen minimum for every centre manager will be maintained. Those with large numbers of candidates must have three or four officers.

"This is my last warning, if you intend to be bold enough to do this, you will be arrested and thrown into prison," he cautioned, and also sent a warning to individuals planning to engage in exam malpractices.

KCSE exams commenced on Friday, March 26 and will end on Wednesday, April 21.
