  • The media industry comes with its intrigues and challenges that demand news anchors and producers to step up when the unscripted happens, especially during live productions.

Journalists are at times caught between a rock and a hard place when faced with guests who attempt to hijack the show and control the narrative.

In extreme cases, the interviews are cut short abruptly due to different reasons. Kenyans.co.ke takes a look at some of the TV interviews that stopped midway.

    Bobi Wine

Robert Kyagulanyi alias Bobi Wine had his interview cut short with media personality Jeff Koinange after the Ugandan Military raided his home on Tuesday, January 12, 2021.

The Hot 96 FM interview took an unexpected turn after the politician notified Jeff that military officers were beating up his security guards.

“I am sorry because as we speak I am being raided by the military. I have to end the interview because I can see soldiers beating my security guards and I have to go down and give it attention,” Bobi Wine said before cutting the transmission.

During the interview, Wine had said that he was a target of President Yoweri Museveni due to his fiery and bold nature of politics.

    Mike Mbuvi Sonko

Jeff Koinange, in yet another encounter, had to cut short an interview with former embattled Nairobi Governor Mike Mbuvi Sonko after the politician made some controversial remarks regarding Nairobi County Women Representative Esther Passaris.

The former governor made allegations against Passaris who could not defend herself since she had travelled to Canada at the time.

Noting that the tension was building, Jeff tried to divert Sonko's attention to his track record but the irritated politician was adamant in exhausting the feud between him and Passaris on live TV.

After a heated exchange between Jeff and Sonko, the show had to take a commercial break that extended to ten minutes.

After the break, Jeff revealed that due to editorial policies and quality controls, the interview had to be discontinued

    Moses Kuria

Gatundu South MP Moses Kuria walked out of an ongoing interview with former Citizen TV news anchor Hussein Mohamed.

The former news anchor confronted Kuria about his hate speech remarks made in past political campaigns.

On July 7, 2015, a video had surfaced of Moses Kuria propagating hate speech. Upon being confronted on live TV by the anchor, Moses Kuria stormed out of the interview.

"We have a way we do things in Royal Media. We have correspondents. Let us play the footage. Let it be fair, you explain your sentiments to the audience," Mohammed pressed Kuria before the politician stormed out.

Initially, the legislator had blamed the media for what he called "biased reporting."

    Boniface Mwangi

During the 2017 General Elections, renowned Kenyan activist Boniface Mwangi walked out of an interview at K24 studios.

The activist was seeking the Starehe Parliamentary seat at the time. He had been invited alongside his rivals for the seat Steve Mbogo of ODM Party and Jubilee Party candidate Charles Kanyi Njagua aka Jaguar.

However, only Mwangi showed up for the show, with Jaguar apparently declining the invitation while Mbogo failed to show up and did not give any explanation.

Mwangi, who did not seem amused that his counterparts had not shown up, walked out of the interview and later explained his move.

"I walked out because of false advertising," he stated.

In November 2016, Mwangi also walked out on a JKL interview on KTN News after he cited that Jeff had invited him alone only to find out that Moses Kuria was the second guest.
