Police in Meru stormed a United Democratic Alliance (UDA) aspirants meeting on Monday, May 31.

According to a report by Capital FM, the police officers disrupted the event that had been convened by UDA Secretary General Veronica Maina over Covid-19 regulations.

The party has been holding meetings with aspirants to explain it’s ideologies, manifesto and it’s constitution, the last having been on May 28 in Nakuru

The meeting involved aspirants from the counties of Tharaka Nithi, Embu, Laikipia, Isiolo, Marsabit and Samburu.

In a video that surfaced online on Monday, The Meru Division Officer, who was accompanied by uniformed officers, is seen arguing with the organisers of the party.

The DO argued that the event had been illegally constituted while the attendees maintained that they were following  the set rules.

“Before we start doing anything else, people disperse and go home.

"We do not need a police permit for this. It's not a public rally," Veronica Maina, denying accusations that the meeting was a rally convened without the police's knowledge.

Interior CS Dr. Fred Matiang'i had on May 30 through a special gazette notice banned public gatherings, processions or movement during the curfew period which he extended by a further 60 days.

Resolutions by the National Security Advisory Committee (NSAC) on October 7, 2020 proposed that no public meeting was to be held without notifying the Officer Commanding Station (OCS).

The party's next meeting is scheduled for June 3, to take place in Mombasa and will involve aspirants from the host county, Tana River, Kilifi, Lamu and Kwale.
