Nairobi Metropolitan Services (NMS) has begun recarpeting lanes in Nairobi Central Business District(CBD).

A spot check by Kenyans.co.ke confirmed that the road works were going on through the night.

Speaking to the media on July 1, NMS Director-General Mohammed Badi revealed that the inner lanes had never been repaired.

NMS said that it had its focus on the lanes after it completed work on all the major roads within the central business district (CBD) in June 2021.

"We do not want to move outside the city centre without having every road recarpeted,” he said.

Recarpeted roads include City Hall Way, Moi Avenue, Wabera Street, Grogon, and Kirinyaga roads.

Kenyatta Avenue, Wabera Street, and Muindi Mbingu Street have also been converted into non-motorized transport corridors with pedestrian and cycle paths put up on the three streets.

This will be a relief to motorists, both private vehicles and matatu drivers, who complained that the bad roads damaged their vehicles.

"I spent money fixing my front bumper which was damaged after hitting a huge pothole. I could not spot it as it was filled with water," a taxi driver said.

The upgrade of city roads is expected to boost traffic flow and ease perennial gridlocks.

Once done,  NMS will also repair roads connecting various estates in the capital city to improve access. NMS is targeting a mid-2021 deadline to have concluded the projects.

"Every road connecting to estates will be done. We are optimistic that all road projects within the city’s informal settlements will be completed by mid-next year,” Badi said.

In February 2021, the NMS also announced plans to rehabilitate more than 38 roads in the Industrial Area.

Roads in the CBD were last recarpeted in 2018 during the regime of impeached governor Mike Sonko following public outrage on the state of city roads.
