Holders of the Kenyan passport are temporarily banned from traveling to some 54 countries around the world.

This follows the enactment of new regulations by the countries to protect their citizens against new variants of coronavirus.

The Henley Passport Index, which has been monitoring the world's most travel-friendly passports since 2006 revealed the move by the states and how the pandemic has affected travel in the countries.

Belgium, Australia, Argentina, Cambodia, UK, Canada, Portugal, Denmark, Bulgaria, and Singapore are the top countries that restricted movements from Kenya.

Other countries include Hong Kong, Bangladesh, Chile, Czech Republic, Cyprus, Bulgaria, and Cameroon.

The decision by the countries come amid fears that the new contagious Delta Variant of the Pandemic may hit Kenya in the next two months, according to the Ministry of Health.

The rapidly transmissible variant was first realized in India and has since been detected in Western Kenya.

In response, the government put health measures in the region to reduce the variant nationwide transmission.

“Borders remain firmly closed in several countries including Australia, Canada, and New Zealand while many others continue to ban travelers from high risk regions,” the Henley and Partners report noted.

Kenya has not so far reacted from the 54 countries including Ireland, Kuwait, Pakistan, Brunei and Thailand.

The Henley Passport Index also shows that the number of countries Kenyans can visit without a visa also dropped from 79 in December last year, 64 in quarter two this year to 59 caused by the pandemic restrictions.

The report also indicates that the resumption of international travels is continuously undermined by the pandemic.
