Three thugs on Tuesday, July 27, stormed a busy banking hall and opened fire during a robbery incident in Matuu town, Machakos County.

The thugs disarmed police officers who were guarding the facility and proceeded to hold customers who were inside hostage.

Witnesses noted that the incident occurred at around 9:00 a.m. and lasted for 15 minutes before all the three robbers escaped.

There was a heavy exchange of gunfire as thugs shot in the air after accessing the premises. One thug was reportedly shot in the arm.

It is still not clear how much money was stolen in the incident.

"The thugs got in the morning as the staff opened the hall. It was around 9:00 a.m. They took everyone hostage and closed the doors.

"There was a gun battle but they were shooting in the air. One thug was shot in the arm," stated one witness.

Police have launched a manhunt for the perpetrators.

This comes barely three weeks after five other suspects were arrested while they allegedly attempting to steal from a bank in the Nairobi Central Business District (CBD) in the wee hours of Friday, July 2.

The police officers were informed that the suspects were spending the night at Angle House on Ukwala Lane within the OTC area, a guest house that shares a wall with the bank.

"They had planned to drill their way into the bank in the dead of the night. However detectives got wind of the plan and spoilt their party!

"They stormed into the building with a thud forcing the thugs to scamper, taking cover in the ceiling like cornered rats," read the statement in part.

Matuu, on the other hand, has experienced a fair share of criminal activities and heists including the arrest of three Special Services Unit detectives who reportedly staged a robbery at a gas cylinder company valued at Ksh300,000 in August 2020.

The incident occurred on July 31 and was stopped by detectives from the DCI.
