A form four student at Othaya Boys High School collapsed and passed on while traveling back to school on July 27, 2021, for the opening day of school.
This was confirmed by the school's Chief Principal Waitiu E.M in a notice seen by Kenyans.co.ke, issued on July 28, 2021.
“ It is with a lot of sadness that we notify you of the sudden passing of Katali Mutinda Kimanthi of ADM No 5160 class 4 H, who collapsed on his way back to school on July 27, 2021, ” the notice stated.
“He was a student at Othaya Boys High School. Kindly condole with us as we condole with his family. Burial arrangements will be communicated later, ” it added.
This comes at a time when the Kenya National Examinations Council (KNEC) issued a strict deadline for the registration of candidates by schools. The deadline lapses on July 31, 2021, without the possibility of an extension.
KNEC scheduled for the candidates to sit their Kenya Certificate of Primary Education (KCPE) and Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) examinations between March 7th-10th and March 11th-1st April 2022 respectively.
“Ensure you accurately record the candidate's order of names as provided in birth certificates, year of birth, gender, subjects entered and other special needs,” added the KNEC CEO Dr Mercy Karogo in a circular addressed to all Subcounty Directors of Education.
Education Cabinet Secretary George Magoha said the Government had released the money to cater for tuition and food to ensure that no child either in primary or secondary schools remains at home after July 26, 2021, when the first term begins.
“The Government issued all the money that was required. Close to Sh17 billion was set aside for the public primary school sector and Sh59 billion for the public secondary school sector,” he said.
He added that each secondary school student had been allocated Sh23, 000 to cater to their needs, including lunch and school uniform.
Othaya Boys High School is one of extra county status schools and is located in Nyeri County in the Central Region of Kenya.
The school is a boarding school and it currently has an enrollment of 1131 students.
