KCSE 2020: Most Preferred Varsities Revealed

Institutions of higher learning across the country are constantly devising means and ways to give them a competitive edge over the rest in offering quality education. These institutions are always innovating and expanding their pools of courses offered so as to maintain that competitive advantage.

A report released by the Kenya Universities and Colleges Central Placement Service (KUCCPS) revealed the most sought-after local universities by KCSE 2020 students during their course selection.

Kenyatta University emerged top, receiving the highest number of students placed at the institution this year. The Nairobi-based varsity will be home to 6,733 fresh students.

KU had initially declared a capacity of 6,894 students, meaning that the university still has some slots left.

Maseno University followed closely with 6,659 students placements against a capacity of 7,740. 

Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology (JKUAT) emerged third after the institution received 6,529 students. This is against a total capacity of 7,151.

The University of Nairobi (UoN) will admit 6,407 students, falling short of its total capacity by 129 students. 

Mount Kenya University rounded up the top five list after it received 5,584 students against the declared capacity of 6,420.

Moi University will admit 5,187 students against its declared capacity of 5,460.

Other universities that received a high number of student placements include Kisii university (4,600), Chuka Unversity (4,133), Egerton University (4,039), Masinde Muliro University of Science and Technology (3,893) and Kirinyaga University (3,142).

Further, the KUCCPS data revealed that the local universities had registered 38,973 slots for fresh students, a notable increment from the previous year's 22,298 slots.

Students also opted to join technical and vocational education and training institutions as the number of placements in these tertiary institutions grew by 40 percent.

The news comes as the Education Ministry affirmed that the government was committed to ensuring a 100 percent transition for all students to join institutions of higher learning.
