Busia parents are overjoyed after a farming project in the county eased the burden of having to pay fees for their children.
The cage farming project has so far raised Ksh3 million, which they have set aside specifically to cater for students who are yet to go to secondary schools.
Sylvester Kaywa, the coordinator of the project, noted that they started the initiative after realising many students were at home due to their parents’ inability to cater for their needs at home and provide fees at the same time.
Sylvester remarked that he, together with the team, decided to brainstorm and come up with a project that would help them and the dropouts as well.
“Education has always been the major challenge in Busia. So, we as the heads of the beaches in Busia thought that it would be good to start a scholarship project,” Sylvester noted.
Once enrolled in the program, the project sees the student through the entire four years of secondary education.
“This is the second year since we began, and we have raised the most funds. We will therefore see over 200 students to school,” he added.
The program head proceeded to say that this was just the beginning, and they would keep working to ensure all students in Busia go to secondary schools.
The parents of the children were overjoyed because this is a challenge that has been giving them sleepless nights.
“I’m a business woman but it is not always rosy. I may spend the whole day in the market, don’t sell anything then come back to my daughter who has been sent away from school,” one parent mentioned.
The parent added that without the project, providing food and school necessities would have been a pipe dream.
The parents were so grateful to the pioneers of the project for helping them focus on providing for their children at home.
