Chaos erupted on Monday night, September 6, after a saloon car fatally knocked down a motorcycle rider and the pillion passenger.

The incident took place near a popular mall in Nairobi's Lang'ata estate. Police officers were, however, swift in their response, arriving at the scene in good time to contain the chaos before things got ugly.

A confrontation between aggrieved boda boda riders and the police ensued with residents reporting that they heard gunshots.

The police were able to contain the situation and restore calm even as accident scene detectives moved in to process the scene.

At the same time, the motorist accused of causing the accident leading to the two deaths was arrested as investigations commenced.

The incident came just a month after King'ori Mwangi, a senior police officer attached to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, was attacked by boda boda riders along the same road.

The officer had allegedly knocked down two pedestrians, leaving them with serious injuries before fleeing the scene of accident.

Boda boda riders pursued the officer and attacked him before they were saved by a policewoman who was on duty.

Witnesses stated that Mwangi was driving on the wrong side of the road when the accident took place.

Boda boda riders have been previously warned about taking matters into their own hands.

In January 2021, Inspector General of Police, Hillary Mutyambai, directed riders to adhere to all set traffic regulations, all laws of public order and decency, failure to which, they would be dealt with in accordance with the law.

"All police officers have been directed to be on the lookout to take the necessary lawful action against any boda boda rider found to be taking the law into their own hands."
