A family in Kiambu County is mourning the loss of their kin who died in a tragic road accident on Saturday, September 11.

Cynthia Waithira, in the company of her four friends, was travelling to Nairobi when their vehicle collided with an oncoming and speeding vehicle in Gilgil.

Reports indicate that Waithira, who was in the back seat, died on the spot after she was flung through the windscreen and landed on the tarmac with her head.

Her friends, however, survived with numerous injuries.

The tragedy comes one month after she graduated from Moi University. On that fateful day, the deceased along with her friends had gone to celebrate her birthday.

A close friend of hers, only identified as Kariuki, told the media that the tragedy was an immense loss to Waithira's family, especially her mother who had lost her only child.

"Cynthia had graduated only last month from Moi University. All her other friends survived but with injuries. We pray for her mother to get comfort at this difficult time," Kariuki told TV47.

The tragedy was also highlighted by former Nairobi Governor, Mike Mbuvi Sonko, who sent his message of condolences to the family.

"This chick Cynthia has died on her birthday in a tragic road accident in Gilgil, just weeks after her graduation. May her soul rest in eternal peace," Sonko stated.

This comes even as police issued stern warning to drivers who defy the traffic orders, posing danger to other motorists and road users.
