The Democratic Party (DP) has announced National Assembly Speaker Justine Muturi as its presidential candidate.
In a meeting held in Nyeri on Tuesday, September 22, delegates from 11 counties in the Mount Kenya region announced their support for Muturi's presidential bid.
The delegates had met in Nyeri to deliberate and prepare themselves for the upcoming 2022 General Election.
"Muturi is a tested leader, a man of integrity we are convinced that he is the person who can lead this country to prosperity,” the delegates stated.
They announced that the party was fully committed to supporting Muturi for his presidential candidature right up to the end.
They described the Speaker was a committed public servant and added that they believed that he would go all through to the ballot as a presidential candidate.
“We have heard him and we believe him that is going to go all through the ballot box. We know him as a man we can trust and we trust he is going right up to the end,” they added
They asked all party members of the party founded by Kenya's third president, Mwai Kibaki, to join in supporting the Speaker fully in his presidential ambitions.
“We ask all DP party members to support Muturi and we hereby today invite Muturi to join DP immediately because members have decided we don’t have a better candidate than him,” they noted.
The National Assembly Speaker officially launched his presidential bid on July 3, ahead of the 2022 General Election.
Muturi had earlier on told leaders from Mt Kenya East that he did not have a lot of confidence in the national parties that most people want to use to ascend to the top seat in the country and assured them he would be announcing his party of choice soon.
"I JB Muturi hereby declare my candidature for the position of the President of the Republic of Kenya come 2022. Very soon I will also declare the party on which I will be running soon. Join me on this journey of bringing back integrity to Kenya," the Speaker stated.
