Patient Detained In Hospital For One Year Released

A woman detained in hospital spent a night with her family for the first time in over a year.

Florence Kagika was released by Eagle Nursing Home on Monday, September 27, where she had been detained over accrued hospital bills.

Kagika had a bill totaling to Ksh1.4 million in the hospital based in Kangemi.

Her husband, Godwin Mahindu told the press that he obtained orders from the Kenya Medical Practitioners and Dentists Council (KMPDC)to secure her release

"I came here looking for help and I was assisted. I have been given a letter," he stated.

Mahindu also disclosed that he had reached an agreement with the health facility on how he would foot the bill.

KMPDC Chief Executive Officer, Daniel Yumbya issued a directive that hospitals holding patients over hospital bills to release the patients, further urging them to enter into agreements on how the bills would be offset.

However, Susan Ogola, a patient detailed at the Kenyatta National Hospital is yet to be released.

Ogola is awaiting for a go-ahead by KNH CEO on whether or not she will be released. She has an accumulated bill of over Ksh2 million.

She stated that her family was not able to pay her hospital bill.

KMPDC warned health facilities from detaining patients stating that it was a contravention of the constitution and questions the ethical conduct of the institutions.
