Kenyan athletes on Monday, October 11, won both the male and female races at the 2021 Boston Marathon in Massachusetts, the US.

Benson Kipruto clocked 2:09:51, winning the 42-kilometre men's marathon ahead of Ethiopia's Lemi Berhanu and Jemal Yimer.

This was Kipruto's first major victory in an international race.

In the women's edition, Kenyan athletes outclassed their competitors to win gold, silver and bronze.

Diana Kipyogei finished first while Edna Kiplagat and Mary Ngugi came in second and third respectively. Kipyogei clocked a time of 2:24:47 as Kiplagat completed the race in 2:25:09

Prior to today's race, Kipruto had not recorded major victories save for winning the Prague and Toronto Marathons. Kiplagat, who won the marathon in 2017, reached a milestone, as she participated in the race aged 41.

Ngugi, the third runner up clocked 2:25:20 while another Kenyan, Monicah Ngige, came in fourth at 2:25:32

Kenyan women reclaimed their glory in the 125th edition of the marathon after failing to clinch victory in the race since 2017.

Notably, the 2020 Boston Marathon was called off due to the prevalence of Covid-19.

The Boston Marathon is a footrace that starts off at Massachusettes and heads to the Black Bay a section of Boston. It is part of six marathons which comprise the Abbott World Major Marathons.

The race was further postponed from its April 2021 date as organisers made adjustments to the race, which included capping participation to 20,000 entrants.
