In an interview with Citizen TV on Tuesday, October 19, Kirinyaga Governor Anne Waiguru called out anchor Waihiga Mwaura over what she alleged was fake news.

The governor was being interviewed on her level of preparedness to host the 58th Mashujaa day celebrations, when Waihiga pointed out several things that had been happening in the county.

As she gave her responses, the anchor kept coming at her, claiming she was contradicting her earlier statements.

“Waihiga, I don’t know where you get your news from,” was a statement the governor posed, after the anchor questioned her on comments she did not agree with.

It all started at the beginning of the interview when Waihiga asked Waiguru why she had made all those preparations, yet she earlier complained that she felt left out of the preparations.

“Governor, it is very interesting that you say that, because you recently stated that you had been in a sense sidelined from the preparations for the Mashujaa day. It’s interesting that you are listing all those plans,” Waihiga stated

The Governor, however, asked Waihiga not to put words in her mouth, because his point of argument was on what the media stated, and not what the governor herself had expressed.

“Those were not my words, Waihiga. That is what the media said but I did not use the word sidelined. I said I am not responsible for the people coming into the stadium, because that is the responsibility of the National government.

“I want us to be clear on what I said and what the media said. Let's be careful not to twist my words,” Waiguru remarked.

Upon being asked the context in which she was giving those sentiments, the governor, in her response, stated that she was not issuing a statement but was just responding to the questions she was asked in an interview.

“I’m done with that question Waihiga,” the seemingly irritated governor remarked, after the anchor persisted with questions related to the same.

Waihiga, however, proceeded to mention that Kirinyaga County has been on the news lately, clearly showcasing the heavy political tension in the county, and whether that has affected the Mashujaa day preparations.

While laughing sarcastically, Waiguru stated that she was not aware of any tensions in her county, adding that the political environment is normal ahead of the 2022 general elections.
