7 Prisoners Escape, 14 People Left Injured

7 prisoners managed to escape last evening while being transferred from Rongo to Migori prisons.

This is after the police vehicle they were traveling in, got involved in a grisly road accident which has also left a total of 14 people injured.

Speaking to the Standard, County police commandant David Kirui sayed the police vehicle that was transporting the inmates was involved in a head-on collision, as it tried to overtake another vehicle.

It is then that the inmates took advantage of the situation and ventured into the nearby sugar plantations.

A shoot out reportedly ensued between the police officers and the inmates who escaped with a gun, after assaulting an officer.

The injured officers and passengers have been admitted at the Migori Level 4 Hospital, as a manhunt for the criminals continue.

This comes as a latest incident of inmates letting themselves off the hook, as police in Nairobi continue searching for three hardcore criminals who escaped from the Kamiti Maximum Prison in May 22.

The three criminals allegedly managed to escape by cutting through a metal grill at their cell, then using bedsheets and blankets to scale the prison perimeter wall.

Last Friday a police vehicle was also involved in a car accident, after losing control and veering off the road while transporting suspects to court.

2 police officers died on the spot, while one officer and 15 suspects were left injured.

Some of the suspects who sustained minor injuries tried to escape but were caught by the residents and handed over to the police.
