7-year-old Electrocuted to Death

A 7-year-old boy on Sunday lost his life after he was electrocuted when a Kenya Power pole fell during the ongoing heavy rains pounding parts of Mombasa.

Area police boss Willy Simba confirmed the incident and said that investigations had been launched to look into the incident.

He urged residents to stay away from flooded regions as they posed a danger to their lives.

"Children should strictly avoid playing in flooded areas and local leaders should give amenities to those affected," said Simba.

Eye witnesses say that the child was on his way from a nearby house when he got electrocuted and died.

"We are not getting any services here. The area has been flooding for several years and no action has been taken so far," the witness added.

The recent incident comes as heavy rains continue to wreak havoc in the Kenyan coast. In another incident, a lorry plunged into the Indian Ocean at the Likoni crossing channel when its brakes failed amid the heavy rains.

Several houses and churches have flooded in Soweto area following the rains. Roads in Changamwe, Kisauni, Bombolulu, Vanga and Nyali have become impassable.

The Kenya Red Cross Society has mapped danger zones and will on Monday issue amenities including medical equipment to families in Vanga.
