Police officers on Saturday, November 13 arrested a middle-aged man at the Lang'ata shopping centre on suspicions of being a terrorist.
The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) narrated how the man approached a police officer on duty along the busy Lang'ata Road seeking confidential information on the operations of a popular restaurant in the area.
According to the DCI, the suspect sought to know on which day of the week the popular joint hosts the largest number of patrons.
The officer was perplexed by the questions from the suspect, who posed as an ordinary civilian seeking general information.
When the officer hesitated to respond, the suspect offered a cash reward of Ksh180,000 in exchange for the information that was not forthcoming.
"Langata based crime busters early today (Saturday) morning arrested a terror suspect at around 2am. The suspect approached a police officer on patrol and cunningly sought information from him that he (the officer) found suspicious."
"The suspect sought to know on which day of the week a popular joint along Langata Road, hosts the largest number of patrons," the statement read.
During his arrest, officers recovered USD1,396 (approximately Ksh156,421 based on the current exchange rates) from the suspect who is currently being grilled by anti-terror detectives.
The arrest comes just days after the United States Department of State announced a reward of up to Ksh669 million for information leading to the arrest of four wanted Al Shabaab leaders.
In a statement by the Rewards For Justice, the four wanted terrorists to include the ring leader Abu Ubadiah, a commander identified as Mahad Karate, Fuad Mohamed Khalaf who was named as a financial facilitator, and Jafar, who is said to be the facilitator and operational planner.
According to the US State Department, the four are wanted in connection to attacks in Kenya, Somalia and other countries in the region.
"The rewards of up to USD6 million for information on Al Shabaab leaders who threaten Kenya and the region’s peace and security," the statement read in part.
Kenyans and Somali nationals were asked to call or text the Rewards For Justice via SMS, Signal, Viber, or WhatsApp should they have information on the four fugitives through +254-718-712-366 (Kenya) and +252-610-703-446 (Somalia).
