Police have barricaded Thika Road causing massive traffic on all Nairobi inbound lanes on the evening of Tuesday, November 16.

Reports indicate that the National Police Service (NPS), with the help of the National Youth Service (NYS) are inspecting all vehicles headed into and out of the Nairobi CBD.

There was a huge snarl up along the highway following the exercise.

It was not immediately clear why the random search was carried out. However, it came a few days after three terrorists escaped from Kamiti Prison on the night of Monday, November 15.

It also came on the same day that a terror attack hit the Ugandan capital of Kampala - prompting the National Police Service to issue an alert advisory to its officers and to civilians.

Witnesses indicated that the traffic was worse around Roysambu area due to the roadblock that has been planted at Garden City Mall.

"Unusually high police presence on Thika Road near Safari Park. Very heavy traffic with police stopping every single car on the service lane for inspection," stated a commuter.

Locally, NPS heightened defence in the country and deployed officers from special units to oversee security within major cities, towns and the Kenyan border after three blasts were reported in the neighbouring Uganda.

In the alert shared today, the police service stated that they have initiated security establishments across the country with heightened safety within towns and borders.

Ugandan authorities confirmed that the attacks were carried out by three suicide bombers causing three more deaths and 33 injuries in Kampala.

The blasts occurred a day after the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) announced that it was offering a Ksh60 million cash reward for information on three terror suspects who broke out of Kamiti Maximum Prison.

One of the attackers was arrested in 2012 after participating in a foiled terror attack near Parliament buildings, another took part in Garissa attack and the third had been booked for attempting to enlist into the Al Shabaab terror group in 2019.

Another terror suspect had earlier been arrested after offering a police officer a bribe of Ksh 180,000 for information regarding a popular club in Kenya.
