Police have tightened security along the Kenya - Uganda border following two more bomb explosions in Kampala.
The intensive security checks have seen hundreds of motorists plying the Wakhaka – Webuye and Webuye - Malaba roads stuck for hours.
Border crossing clearances have also been affected with border police thoroughly searching all the passenger and cargo vehicles crossing the border.
Officers manning the permeable border said they are not leaving anything to chance following the recent spate of bombings in the neighbouring country.
The security checks have led to a huge traffic snarl-up stretching from Kocholia to Malaba, a distance of about 7kms.
Bungoma County police boss, Musyoki Mutungi, has urged Kenyans and other travellers using the road to be patient, noting that security had been intensified to keep the country safe.
He explained that recent events in Uganda called for a more intense security check.
"We are all aware terrorists attacked the neighbouring country with which we share a border. We also had terrorists escape from a prison in Kenya but have since been re-arrested. We cannot sleep or relax," Mutungi stated.
The police boss further asked officers under his command from different units to stay vigilant especially those manning the border entry points.
"We have a very good working relationship with all security agencies and our main goal is to ensure our people are safe," he stated.
This comes a day after Interior Cabinet Secretary, Fred Matiang'i, asked Kenyans to brace for inconveniences caused by security checks to be conducted across the country.
CS Matiang'i stated that the government had raised the level of alertness and effected far-reaching changes such as intensified screening systems at the airports and the SGR.
Matiang'i told Kenyans that the country was not out of the woods yet and "we are in an unusual space because of what is happening around us."
