Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i, in the company of former Prime Minister Raila Odinga's wife, Ida Odinga, helped raise Ksh50 million meant to improve the infrastructure for Nyaura Primary School in Kisii County.

In a funds drive that was held on December 5, the two leaders mobilised other top government officials to raise the funds during an event that lasted for over two hours.

After the event that was organised by Health Principal Secretary Susan Mochache, Matiang'i stated that the funds raised would help in transforming the school facilities to modern standards.

Among the projects to be undertaken by the school administration include the construction of an ultra-modern dining hall and library.

"Nyaura School is one of the public schools that are going to be densely populated because of the commercialisation of the Nyaribari Chache area. Therefore, the school has to be re-done to the standards that can accommodate thousands of students,' he stated.

While making her contribution of Ksh1 million, Ida encouraged Kenyans not to rely on government funds to improve their school facilities but to donate money to their previous institutions of learning.

'When I asked her (Mochache) why this particular school. She revealed to me that her father studied in this school and that she also went to the same school. She also stated that she wanted to make it modern.

"Go back to your school the way Mochache has invited us to come back to this school and do something," Ida stated.

Among other top government officials who attended the event include Health CS Mutahi Kagwe and his ICT counterpart Joe Mucheru.

Additionally, it was announced by Kagwe that President Uhuru Kenyatta had sent his contribution of Ksh1 million through Matiang'i who also presented another Ksh1.8 million which was contributed by other cabinet secretaries.

In the end, the Interior CS added his own contribution to that of his cabinet colleagues and presented a collective sum of Ksh5 million.

Being an event that saw who is who from both national and county governments make huge contributions, Kagwe warned those who were planning to raid the school stating that the money would be deposited in the banks.

"Those who are planning to come here at night, this money is not here. This money is in the bank and all the money that has been given here in cash will be at the bank by the time this function has ended," Kagwe stated
