Garissa Township Member of Parliament, Aden Duale, on Tuesday, December 7, revealed his new role in parliament.

The former Leader of Majority disclosed that he assumed a new position created by the Speaker of the National Assembly, Justin Muturi.

Duale revealed that he was now a Ranking member, a position borrowed from the American House of Congress and Senate.

"With the privilege and the courtesy of Speaker Muturi, we have adapted what is called the status of a ranking member," he stated.

In the US Congress, a ranking member is the senior-most member of parliament from the minority party.

The MP noted that the position was only reserved for members of the August house who have held a constitutional office.

The ranking member enjoys several privileges including sitting in all house committees, where he or she serves as an ex-officio member of all sub-committees.

Duale stated that the new position will see him take a back seat in parliament, adding that he would not be as proactive as he was when he was the Majority leader.

"You don't want me to  behave like the way I was behaving when I was the leader of government business. I must now behave like a backbencher," Duale mentioned.

According to the Garissa Town MP, he is now the leader of opposition and the leader of the minority in parliament, following the handshake.

The legislator also revisited the time when he was the majority leader in the first parliament under the new constitution.

"I was not per say a minister but I was like the voice of government in the house," he narrated.

Duale added that he was the link between the legislature and executive. He further stated that that was the best term, as the opposition was very strong
