The government has set up training programs to provide inmates with opportunities to acquire technical skills that will be useful during their reintegration into the society.

Speaking at the Naivasha Maximum Security Prison, Interior Cabinet Secretary, Fred Matiang'i, stated that his Ministry has acquired new equipment and tools for the workshops to train more inmates.

“Further to the instructions given by the President, we have acquired new equipment and tools for the workshops to train more inmates. We are also going to begin serious inspection throughout our facilities so that we have a clean environment,” stated Matiang'i.

Similarly, the government, in partnership with private organisations and well-wishers, has earmarked more resources to provide essential amenities through a welfare improvement program.

The Kenya Prisons Project helps inmates acquire technical skills to help them merge better with society and break the cycle of crime once they are released.

The move comes after the Matiang'i-led Ministry committed to provide more resources to prisons and other correctional facilities to make them hospitable.

In the statement, the outspoken Cabinet Secretary noted that prisoners have a right to be respected and their well-being safeguarded, adding that his Ministry will be providing mattresses, blankets and other necessities for them.

“Prisoners are our fellow citizens. They are taken to prison to be integrated back to society ,not to die. As such, the rights of all those who come through this process must be respected and their well-being safeguarded. We are now planning to ensure that every inmate has a mattress, a blanket, and other necessities,” he added.

The resources donated by the Ministry of Sports, Bedi Investment Limited, and Angelica Medical Supplies, include beddings, foodstuffs, and soaps among other essential supplies.

Matiang'i additionally announced that the government will erect tanks with 150,000 litres capacity to ensure a stable water supply and improve hygiene conditions.

Speaking at the same event witnessed by commissioner of Prisons Brig (Rtd) John Warioba and Interior Chief Administrative Secretary, Winnie Guchu, Sports Cabinet Secretary, Ambassador Amina Mohammed, pledged to support sporting activities in prisons by providing balls to inmates, adding that she will foresee talent development in prisons.

"From the drawings I have seen, it is evident there is an abundance of talent among inmates that should not go to waste. We will plan with prisons authorities to provide balls and other sporting equipment and encourage those with talent to continue polishing it so that when they come out, they can benefit from their skills," CS Amina remarked.

At the same time, Matiang'i promised that prisoners will be considered in the Covid-19 booster jabs.
