President Uhuru Kenyatta has addressed concerns by a section of Kenyans that part of Uhuru Park was grabbed by private developers.

Speaking to the media on Thursday, December 23, Uhuru allayed fears that Uhuru Park has been grabbed by private developers after it was cordoned off and members of the public asked to stay away.

Uhuru assured the public that the construction works currently ongoing at Uhuru Park are just aimed at giving the park a facelift and the land had not been grabbed.

The president went ahead and asked journalists who were present during the tour to capture the construction works and relay the information to Kenyans for purposes of transparency.

“The difference that is being occasioned by the road building, by the drainage and sewage being put in, I do believe that within another two years, Nairobi will be a truly 21st century city, catering for its population in a positive manner and in a manner befitting our people,” Uhuru stated.

“Those who were reporting that Uhuru Park has been grabbed please take pictures and show members of the public the work that we are doing here please," he added.

The President further stated that the renovation at Uhuru Park was meant to facelift the city and create a beautiful space where Kenyans can relax and be proud of.

"All this is because we want to better the lives of Kenyans so that they can be proud of their city, Nairobi and also their country. That is our only wish and nothing else," he continued.

This comes after an uproar on social media on Sunday, November 21, after reports of the ongoing activities at Uhuru Park in Nairobi.

A section of Kenyans stated the pavilion at the park was brought down alongside the main podium as part of the demolitions reportedly being carried out by the Nairobi Metropolitan Services (NMS).

This had created a wave of rage among netizens who took to social media to protest the activities, fearing a plan to get rid of the park.

Many wondered why the government would conduct demolitions of the park just days after the United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP26) where President Uhuru Kenyatta advocated for the protection of the environment.

On the other hand, other Kenyans pointed out that the project was part of a renovation process hence urging those enraged to stay calm as this was a planned project by the county government.
