Residents living around Witethie along Thika road were on Monday, December 27, asked to exercise extra caution over roaming hyenas.

This follows the incident where a man was attacked by a pack of 20 hyenas on his way home from a mine where he worked.

In a statement  by the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI), the two were ambushed by hyenas at about 5 a.m on Monday.

"A man died this morning died after was attacked by about 20 hyenas on his way home from Komu mine," the statement read in part.

The man was in the company of his colleague, who managed to escape the ordeal unharmed. However, the man was overpowered by the hyenas that mauled him.

His colleague went out in search of help only to come back to find him dead. The man succumbed to the lacerations from the attack.

According to the DCI, the hyenas had strayed from one of the nearby national parks. Officers from the Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) have been dispatched to trace and capture the stray pack of hyenas.

However, area residents have been asked to remain vigilant.

"Kenyans have been advised to exercise extra caution as the KWS officers work to resolve the matter," the statement read.

The incident comes months after yet another man was attacked by an unknown number of hyenas in Athi Village in Juja, Kimbu County.

According to the police, the 38-year-old man was drunk at the time of the attack.
