Deputy President William Ruto’s digital and campaign strategist, Dennis Itumbi, has warned the Directorate of Criminal (DCI) to refrain from the constant visits by officers seeking his statement.
Through his lawyer, Kamotho Njenga, Itumbi claimed the officers received instructions from the highest office to have him sign mysterious documents.
"The said officers intimated that they had instructions from the highest office to have the medical process interrupted, in order to have our client sign some mysterious documents. Nothing can be more callous," the lawyer stated.
Hinting at a foul play by the officers, lawyer Njenga added that his client ought to fully recuperate before recording any statement to the police.
Further, he issued an ultimatum to DCI boss George Kinoti to either publicly explain the progress of the investigations into his abduction and torture days ago or else he will take legal action.
"We are instructed that on December 29, 2021, persons who presented themselves as DCI officers visited the medical facility where our client is recuperating at the ICU seeking among other things, to obtain undefined statements."
“There can be no justification as to why our client, a victim of heinous atrocities is being trailed to his hospital bed in absolute disregard of his health and legal rights. Our client is a law-abiding citizen and duly entitled to recuperate without interference, intrusion or snooping,” he added.
In a previous statement, DP Ruto accused the government of using threats and violence against his supporters, giving example of the debilitated state that Itumbi is in.
"I saw his heavily bangled arm and legs, the result of torture by people who should have been there to protect him and us all."
"They have now turned violent and fatalistic after all the negative narratives, threats and blackmail against us failed," Ruto stated in a statement.
This came after Itumbi's family raised the alarm over their kin who had gone missing on December 23. Media reports claimed that he was abducted in Thindigua by three unknown men into an awaiting vehicle that drove off.
The strategist was found later dumped and with injuries, claiming torture from his captors.
