One of the three survivors in the deadly crash involving a Public Service Vehicle (PSV), has revealed what happened.
Speaking to the press on Sunday, January 2, The survivor, Collins Otenyo, noted that the matatu he was travelling in, belonging to 2NK Sacco, rammed into a parked lorry.
He further revealed that the lorry did not have any hazard placards neither did it have lights on although it was parked on a dangerous strip of the Eldoret- Webuye Highway.
"We found a lorry was parked and it did not have a hazard (placards) and we rammed into it. From there, I do not know what happened to it," stated Otenyo, a school teacher.
Lugari Sub County Police Commander, Bernard Ndung'u, noted that the police believe the driver of the matatu must have been speeding at the time of the accident.
He further disclosed that all the eight people died instantly due to the impact of the crash.
"The matatu crashed into that lifesaver triangle until it lamped into the right side of the truck whereby because of the impact, since it was on a high speed, it rolled up to the right side of the road," he explained.
Area residents now want the government to erect bumps along the stretch noting that it had become a deathtrap prone because of speeding.
The matatu, a part of the 2NK Sacco, was heading to Nairobi from Bungoma when it hit the stationary lorry from behind at Musembe.
Eight people including the driver of the matatu died on the spot while the rest who survived were rushed to the nearby health facilities for treatment.
Among the deceased were a senior National Youth Service (NYS) officer, Margaret Walela, and her son who had just come from December holidays upcountry.
Others who were involved in the crash were a family of three- wife, husband and daughter. The husband survived but his wife and child lost their lives.
