Drama ensued in Westlands area of Nairobi County after a suspect resisted arrest engaging the police officer who went to apprehend him in a fistfight.

The alarm was raised after the said suspect allegedly threatened to eliminate another person on Friday, January 7, leading to law enforcement officers pursuing him before he made true his threats.

Upon reaching the scene, General Mathenge Road in Westlands, the suspect confronted the officer from the Serious Crimes Unit, resisting the arrest order. The suspect, according to the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI), turned unruly and started attacking the cop.

The police officer, who is trained in martial arts, was forced to unleash his karate skills, subduing the suspect before arresting him.

"A man who threatened to kill another and cut him into small pieces of flesh has been arrested by Serious Crimes Detectives. He was arrested along General Mathenge Road in Nairobi’s Westlands area, where he also caused a scene after resisting arrest and attacked the arresting officer," DCI stated.

"What followed was a scuffle as the unruly suspect attempted to throw kicks and punches at the detective Inspector of Police. But the officer, who is also a martial arts specialist, subdued the man effortlessly."

The suspect was then moved to a nearby police station within the city where he is facing charges of issuing threats to another person which is contrary to the Penal Code.

In a warning issued by DCI following the incident, members of the public have been cautioned against attacking a police officer or resisting arrest as it attracts a fine not exceeding Ksh1 million or an imprisonment term not exceeding ten years.

"Members of the public are advised to note that assaulting a police officer, resisting or willfully obstructing a police officer in the due execution of his duties attracts a fine not exceeding Ksh1 million or imprisonment for a term not exceeding ten years, or both."

Cases of suspects resisting arrest have been on the rise in recent times in the country forcing security officers to act, and in some cases resulting in deaths.

In a recent case in Murang'a, a serial jailbreaker was gunned down after he resisted arrest and unleashed a toy gun threatening to attack a police officer and a girl he had abducted.

Confirming the incident, Murang'a South Sub County Police Commander, Alexander Shikondi, noted that the law enforcement officers from the region responded to the distress call and caught up with the suspect who was holding the girl hostage at an abandoned house.

"We challenged him to stop and release the girl but he drew the weapon from his waist and charged at the officers while aiming. Police officers fired at him to immobilise him and one bullet hit his lower mid-abdomen," the police commander stated.
