Drama is surrounding the details shared by the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) on the identity of a man listed among most wanted criminals.
The young man who hails from Nyeri surrendered to the police in the county after he saw his picture circulating on media platforms.
Worried and seeking to clear his name, the man identified as Robert Gathogo Ngunjiri handed himself over to the police and he was detained.
Nyeri Central Sub-County Police Commander Paul Kuria stated that Gathogo told police he had been arrested and convicted of robbery with violence charges in 2014 and that is why police have his picture in their database.
Gathogo, however, appealed the decision and was acquitted of the offence in January 2019.
"He surrendered to the police station on Wednesday night claiming that he was the man in the photo captioned as Abdurahman Hija but the information accompanying it was not his," Kuria stated.
But, despite claiming innocence, the young man was picked up by detectives from the Anti-Terrorism Police Unit (ATPU).
The 27-year-old was transferred to Nairobi by the ATPU officers for grilling.
Gathogo's picture was attached to details of a person by the alias Abdurahman Hija Mnubi aged 27 years surrendered in Nyeri claiming he is innocent.
He was among eight people being sought by the DCI over what the police termed as involvement in serious crimes.
DCI indicated that the person identified as Mnubi was allegedly dispatched back to Kenya to carry out terror attacks and that's why he was on the DCI's red list.
The DCI had further warned the public that the reported suspects on the lose were armed and dangerous thus pleading with the public to assist in nabbing them.
