Milly Nafula, a grade A-minus student who missed university placement for 14 years has received a piece of land and a new house as part of a scholarship deal.
While receiving her scholarship officially from Mount Kenya University on Friday, February 25, the institution's founder, Prof Simon Gicharu indicated that the land and house were incentives to her education fund.
The 32-year-old was awarded a scholarship worth Ksh3.3 million and was enrolled in the university to pursue a degree in Bachelor of Surgery and Bachelor in Medicine.
This comes after Gicharu in December 2021, stated that he was touched by Nafula's plight.
"I was touched when I saw her story on TV. I asked myself, how can we as Kenyans allow her to stay at home for so many years just because she was not admitted to a university.
“I would like to inform this congregation that we will give a scholarship to her. This will enable her to actualise her dream,” he stated.
On her part, Nafula stated that she would make the best out of the opportunity for her and her siblings.
Nafula caught the eye of Kenyans when her story was first aired by Citizen TV on December 7. It was revealed that the former student of Manor House High School was not placed despite positing exemplary results.
"I went to the principal (her high school) to raise the issue and I was told that the school had not received any letter from the joint admissions board.
"I was also advised to go to Nairobi to ask about the matter but because I could not raise the fare, I wrote a letter to the board through the District Officer in Kitale in 2009. He sent the letter but there was no response," she stated then.
Other than MKU, various institutions and well-wishers offered to assist the Grade A-minus student who was working at her posho mill to fend for her siblings having lost her mother.
Former Chairman of the Commission for University Education (CUE) offered to give Nafula and her siblings Ksh10,000 yearly to support them in buying household necessities.
"I am going to work very hard to make my sponsors very proud. I have a huge expectation ahead of me but I am determined to achieve my goals," she stated.
