A Kiambu court was left in shock after detectives testified how a 33-year-old duped everyone he came across to believe he was a primary school student after quitting university.

The story of Lloyd Abednego Mogoi alias Gamaliel Isaac Mogoi starts in 2003 when he completed his Kenya Certificate of Primary Education (KCPE) examination and enrolled in Mutuini High School in Dagoretti the following year.

In Form Three, Mogoi was among the most popular students in school but as his fame started dwindling, he decided to transfer to Dr Ribeiro Parklands Boys High School.

He did his Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education exam in 2008 and scored a mean grade of B with 65 points but declined government admission to the Technical University of Kenya.

Mogoi went back to sit for the national exam a second time and he scored a B+ and secured a slot at Egerton University.

He was admitted to Egerton University where he pursued a Bachelor of Science in Instrumentation and Control Engineering. He was given a scholarship but he was not content with life on campus.

In his Forth year, Mogoi left the university and disappeared - never to be seen on campus again. After three years, Mugoi resurfaced in 2018, at Kisii Central Registration of Persons Office.

He was looking to acquire crucial documents under the pretence that his government certificates and identity were destroyed in a fire. He told officers at the Registration of Persons that he had lost his birth certificate in the fire and needed one as a replacement.

"You pushed a false statement that you were issued with a birth certificate under the name of Gamaliel Isaac Mogoi, knowing you had formerly been issued with National Identity Card in the name of Lloyd Abednego Mogoi," the charge sheet read in part.

The court further heard that the accused person created a fake personality and was given a new birth certificate under the identity of Gamaliel Isaac Mogoi. He immediately left Kisii and travelled to Kiambu County under a new name.

In Kiambu, he sought admission at Gachororo Primary School as a needy student who had been unable to pursue his education due to financial setbacks. He was enrolled on Class 7.

Mogoi was an A student at he would often leave the primary school and go to a neighbouring secondary school to teach Form Four students Geography and Mathematics. He sat for his KCPE exams and scored an impressive 410 marks out of the possible 500.

He got admission to Alliance High School but this was the end of the road for the imposter. Mogoi incited students at the National school to strike but his plans did not materialize.

The teachers decided to find out his background in order to understand where his issues seemed from but what they uncovered was a complicated web of lies.

Nothing about the new Form One student made sense to the teachers and they decided to call in the police.

Mogoi was taken into custody and charged that between October 28, 2020, and November 8, 2021, as a Form One student at Alliance, he printed the words, “Alliance High School Strong to Serve, you gave us a deceptive and corrupt principal, kindly take him back. School bus, chapel, badge support and Form I intake bribery.”

The case continues to be heard at the Kikuyu Law Courts.
