The County Government of Kiambu is seeking to recruit 23,000 youth for the Kazi Mtaani initiative.
The county revealed that it was awaiting an approval from the National Assembly to release the funds that will facilitate the recruitment of the 23,000 young people who will enlisted to work in the Housing Department.
The County Director of Housing, Michael Mburu, confirmed that the county will be recruiting the workers once the Ksh3 billion budget is approved by Parliament.
The third cohort will get deployed to various departments such as maintenance work on government buildings, sanitation, environmental conservation, garbage collection and painting dilapidated government buildings.
Others will be deployed to plant trees and improve access roads and footpaths in the various parts of the county in a bid to ease the movement by pedestrians and motorists.
“The grass at the Gatundu Stadium was planted by Kazi Mtaani cohorts and the landscaping works at the office of the Deputy County Commissioner (DCC) in Juja was also done by them, now the stadium can be used for matches," Mburu explained.
He acknowledged the importance of the Kazi Mtaani Initiative in creating employment opportunities adding that the youth have been instrumental in changing Kiambu County.
Mburu pleaded with the youth to grab the opportunity and apply for the job vacancies once they are advertised by the government.
“One will only be required to be a Kenyan citizen with a national Identification Card (ID), be between age 18 and 35 years and have a mobile money account for payments," he stated.
In November 2021, the government was overwhelmed by the number of applicants, forcing it to carry out the recruitment in two drive. Thousands of youths were locked out of the online application process but the Housing Principal Secretary, Charles Hinga, stated that those who were locked out were allowed to make their applications through Huduma Centers.
He noted that some of the applicants had been locked from the system due to poor network or lack of internet access.
The directive also helped individuals who could not make the applications due to system clog or breakdown caused by high traffic towards the portal have their details captured.
Nairobi led with 113,653 applications and Kiambu was second with 44,689 applications, followed by Nakuru with 33,305. Mombasa recorded 32,548 applications while Wajir had 22,280 and Uasin Gichu came in fifth with 19,020 applications.
