The government has committed to providing free meals and accommodation to KCPE candidates in several areas of the Rift Valley including Baringo, Elgeyo Marakwet, West Pokot, and Turkana counties.

Rift Valley Regional Commissioner Mohammed Maalim, on Sunday March 4, announced the mitigation policy further assuring parents that no candidate will miss any exam because of insecurities in the region.

He proceeded to say that there was enough security provided by the government to ensure the national examinations proceed smoothly.

He went ahead to make it clear that facilities like accommodation and food should be provided to some day schools in order to achieve possible minimum movements on the way and therefore help boost security of the candidates sitting their exams.

With the current ongoing banditry attacks in the region, he showed regrets that children were being recruited into joining banditry activities at a very young age but expressed hope that education would help eradicate the vice.

“It is unfortunate that young children are used as cattle rustlers instead of being in school, something that should not be encouraged during this era,” stated Mohammed.

He made a plea to parents, asking them to cooperate with the local authorities and leaders from the region to help boost school intake in the region.

“Education pays, take your children to school, the best inheritance a parent can offer a child is education,”  stated Mohammed. He was attending a peace dialogue meeting in Loruk area in Baringo County.

Rehearsals for the forthcoming exams started on Friday 4th, ahead of the planned commencement on Monday, March 7th. A total of 1,225,693 candidates are expected to sit the exam across the 28,248 examination centres countrywide.

More boys than girls are expected to sit their exam with 55 per cent of the candidates being male. There has also been an increase of up to 34,085 from the previous year.

The rehearsals saw the pupils taken through the dos and don'ts for their engagements during the examination period.
