Four officers attached to the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) are in trouble after allegedly accepting a Ksh1 million bribe from a Chinese investor.

The four were reportedly offered the money in order not to charge the investor's wife who had been accused of committing an immigration offence.

The woman is said to have been living in the country illegally has she had invalid documents.

Three of the officers were arrested over the matter while the main suspect escaped the dragnet by the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) officers.

The three, however, did not take plea during their arraignment on Monday, March 14, due to the absence of the main suspect.

Anti-Corruption Principal Magistrate Victor Wakumil directed the main suspect to appear before the court on Tuesday, March 22, for plea taking.

"I indulge the defence so as to put their house in order. Summons to issue against Julius Onyango Oguma. Plea-(taking) deferred to March 22, 2022, at 9.a.m.," directed the magistrate.

A report by Nation indicated that the main suspect's escape was aided by the other three suspects who shot in the air during the arrest.

The incident took place at Kabete Police Station.

The four now face four counts including conspiracy to commit a crime, aiding a prisoner's escape, receiving the bribe as well as robbery with violence.

Kenya continues to grapple with corruption and ranks poorly on the global index. President Uhuru Kenyatta is on the record sating that, taxpayers lose a whopping Ksh2 billion daily to graft.

Efforts by the authorities to tame the vice is, however, progressing slowly with Sirisia MP John Waluke being the first high-profile suspect to be convicted of graft.
