"Section 103 of the National Police Service Act of 2011 provides for a harsh punishment against any act of aggression towards a police officer on official duty. This includes a fine of Ksh1 million and imprisonment to a period of 10 years," read the police statement.

NPS went ahead to thank onlookers who were at the scene for rushing to protect the officer on duty.

"Our sincere gratitude to the members of the public who came to the aid of our officer. We urge the public to cooperate with the police in their duty of keeping our communities safe."

According to reports, the altercation erupted after the police officer intervened following an accident incident that involved the motorist's car.

A video seen by Kenyans.co.ke, the police officer was engaged in a discussion with civilians who had witnessed the accident.

Moments later, the motorist moved towards the police officer and punched him on the head leading to a violent altercation.
